The following are a number of fun games to play in the car. They are instructive, but first and foremost can make car journeys easier and help keep the atmosphere in the car calm and peaceful.

Guess the celebrity
One of you thinks of a celebrity. The others then have to figure out who the celebrity is, but they can only ask questions that can be answered with a yes or no. The challenge is to guess the name of the celebrity based on the answers to as few questions as possible. Take turns to pick the celebrity, and count the number of questions asked each time. The winner is the person whose celebrity could only be guessed after the largest number of questions had been asked.

Make up a story together
One of you starts to compose a story, “Once upon a time there was a …,” after a while the person to the left takes over where the first person has left off and continues the tale. The stories tend to be a bit crazy, but the crazier the tale, the more fun it is making it up.

Count horses
Each person chooses one side of the car. Then simply start counting horses. The winner is the first person to see twenty horses. It doesn’t have to be horses of course; you can choose to count anything you want.

We’re there now!
Pick something out that is a long way away, such as a church tower or a big tree somewhere on the horizon. Everybody shuts their eyes (preferably not the driver) and yells “we’re there now” when they think the car has reached the chosen landmark. Another variation of this game is to guess when you are home. Everybody shuts their eyes and tries to follow the turns, stops and slopes of the road home, and then yells “We’re home” when they think the car has reached home.

Games with names or cities
Somebody starts by saying a girl’s name. The next person then has to come up with a name starting with the final letter of the name said by the previous person. If the first persons says Nicole, for example, the next person has to think of a name beginning with the letter E. If that person then says Edith, the next person has to come up with a name beginning with H and so on. Anyone who can’t come up with a name, or who repeats a name that has already been said, is out. The task of finding a name beginning with the letter in question passes to the next person. This game can also be played with boys names, with names of cities, or with other words.

Number plate game
This game can be played in countries that have numbers on their number plates. Collect numbers from number plates. One of you starts from 001, and the other from 100. You should then collect the numbers in order: 001 (or 100), 002 (099) and so on. The first to reach 50 is the winner. Children can also co-operate with one another, starting with 001 and going all the way to 999. It takes a very long time – probably the whole vacation and maybe even the next.

Color hunt
Each person chooses a color – but it has to be an unusual color. Count the cars coming towards you in that color. The first to see ten cars in their color wins.

Trivial pursuit
You can only play this game if one of the passengers in the car can read. Before you start your journey, make sure to bring a box of Trivial Pursuit cards with you. Ask each other questions and if a person answers correctly, he or she keeps the card. First to ten cards wins.

Read a book aloud or borrow audio books from the library
Take a really good book with you and read aloud to the children. If the child is old enough, take it in turns to read. You can also borrow audio books from most libraries that you can play in the car.

The quiet game
At a given signal, everybody has to be silent. The next person to say anything buys the others an ice-cream the next time the car stops.

How far?
Pick a landmark in the distance – like a church tower – and try to guess how far it is away. Use the car’s odometer (the distance counter) to see how close your guess is.
